Victoria: Week 3+4

I write this blog as I am currently sitting on a flight on my way to explore Xiamen! This gal booked a spontaneous trip to Xiamen, China and Denpasar, Indonesia (Bali). I am super excited for this experience and to continue to grow as an individual. That being said, I apologize as I won’t be sharing any images or links as I write this on my iPad.

Practicum:

My final two weeks at HeartPress PR consisted of finalizing my small projects such as media lists, media advisory, press releases, market validation research, backgrounders and client relations. In addition to my small tasks it was essential to ensure my main client Volunteer Victoria is set for National Volunteer Week on April 15-21. Volunteer Victoria is one of HeartPress PR clients and became my main client to oversee stepping into my role. I became the main contact for all partners, sponsors, media relations, and communicator for Volunteer Victoria’s Week event. This consisted of several emails, spreadsheets, event planning and just about everything you can think of when doing PR for a client. My last two weeks flew by extremely quick as my final date at the office was sneaking up on me. In regards to social media I spent a good full day creating content and scheduling posts – easy task? Not so easy after all, especially when your scheduling far ahead. This task is also very time consuming!

Overall my month time at HeartPress PR taught me many skills, a lot more insight in community relations, non-profits and PR, and what it can look like to also work with small-medium size businesses. I am extremely grateful for this opportunity and the connections I know have in Victoria. The purpose of moving to Victoria was not just for personal growth, learnings, and findings, but more importantly, relationship building and making those strong connections in a new city. I value connection and I believe it is so important to build those relationships, especially being in the PR.

Lululemon:

Working 8AM – 8PM isn’t anyone’s “best life” but when it comes to lululemon Victoria and the community built within the team and the guests was so lifting and positive that I completely enjoyed every minute at the store. Double shifts can be hard but this culture and community foundation Lululemon Johnston St offers made it so easy to come to work.

Making connections and meeting more of our ambassadors through sweat sessions brought such joy! My heart is so full with the relationships I’ve built within this community and the friendships I walked away with,

Coffee Shops:

I finally checked out Discovery, one of Victoria’s “must” coffee shops. The brew, the people and the atmosphere was great! Freshly brewed – that’s a hell yes for me!

Hey Happy – the sun was beaming through the open glass window as I sipped on my coffee. This place was so rad as you can watch them freshly make your coffee – ooo that drip!

What’s Next?

This question is rising and I can’t say I know exactly what is next for me. This question is so big but It doesn’t scare me at all. I have a vision. I have goals. I will crush those goals and I will pursue my vision and make it a reality. How and when will that be? Time will tell. This trip was not in the plans for this year, yet it was booked before I gave my notice to both Lululemon and the Whitecaps FC. I had a slight fear it may not workout and I may come back jobless, however I am grateful and thankful to be apart of two amazing companies that support my vision and goals. In fact, I received “congratulations, you deserve it – have fun!” – WHAT A DREAM!

I am extremely thankful and my heart is so full with everyone’s support.

Goodbye KPU thank you for the many lessons. That chapter of my life is now closed.

Victoria: Week 2

Practicum:

During my second week, I was challenged with prioritizing work for each client. My notebook was full of assignments that needed to be done – all are important. However, it was my decision to decide which project I would tackle first and the tricky part about this is your clients don’t always check their emails and don’t always get back to you right away – so how do you move on? I learned that sometimes you need to make the decisions for them, sometimes you need to prompt them for an answer, or you just simply leave it. Last week HeartPress PR did a pitch and this week we received amazing news and will be moving forward (can’t say what/who for confidential reasons) but this was super exciting to be a part of!

On an even more exciting note, I was offered to extend my contract and continue to work for HeartPress PR – Victoria is calling me people! This place is gorgeous and everything is so close. At first I struggled adjusting BUT my lemon family, new freinds, and my best friend are making it so much easier to fall in love with this place. I am torn but so thankful for this opportunity and I can’t say what my decision is on this yet!

Lululemon:

#JOBLOVE – Last week I got to touch base with the Victoria community even deeper! This small little town is slowly growing on me and it helps that I have such loving co-workers who are amazing supporters So many team building activities and learnings from lululemon Victoria.

Coffee Shop of The Week:

2% Jazz Cafe – This place is so rad and the people are even more rad – aha! My coffee beans came from Brazil and it sure was delicious! I am so fascinated by the different tastes – oh how I love fresh brewed coffee!!! Anyways, this place also has delicious food too!

Weekend:
Saint Franks – Who doesn’t love games! I absolutely love game nights and this bar has it all. So many good old games to choose from and apparently, they have the best hot dogs too! We arrived too late for the hot dogs but the drinks and the bumpin’ ambiance of Saint Franks was so good!

Victoria: WEEK1

Practicum:

My PR practicum kicked off this past Monday morning on March 12th. I walked into HeartPress PR and felt immediately welcomed by the team and was gifted my personal HeartPress PR coffee mug. My heart was so full and right in that moment I knew I had made the right choice. It took approximately 1 minute to make new connections in the PR industry in Victoria – thank you HeartPress PR for this opportunity and for being so kind!

My first week consisted of learning our brand voice, getting to know our current clients and the new projects we have upcoming. In addition to this, the team had two big presentations and an important pitch that I got to sit in and take part in. My first week was full with a lot of work and that was just the beginning. I love every minute in the office and as each day goes by I am now more than ever sure about my career choice in PR.

Lululemon:

When it comes to lululemon I was not nervous to meet the team at all. Walking into lululemon felt like walking into a room full of more ‘family’ members! New faces with big smiles and filled with lots of love, positivity, and energy! The store felt like home and I am so grateful to be a part of such an amazing company – #joblove.

Coffee Shop Of The Week:
Caffe Fantastico was the first coffee shop I went to and the views in this shop are beautiful! My supervisor and I took our one-on-one meeting over to this cafe on a sunny day and the scenery was beautiful! You definitely need to try there peanut butter cookie with a side of Cafe Au Lait (coffee of the day) – textured steamed milk. Your choice of texture!

Weekend:
St Patricks Day – Woo! I hit up The Canoe Pub and a live local band called OK Charlie performed top hits – you bet I was on the dance floor singing a long!

Why Victoria?

“Why did you decide to move to Victoria for your practicum? Vancouver has so many opportunities!”

This question comes up quite often, especially since I am now officially in Victoria for the next couple weeks. So here is why I chose to move to Victoria for my practicum:
It really came down to the overall experience. After travelling back and forth from Vancouver to Victoria a consecutive of times I started to get curious about the PR work that Victoria may have to offer. I know Victoria is small and opportunities may be limited, however the idea of living on my own for a couple of weeks, exploring a new place, and stepping out of my comfort zone was very intriguing!
As an individual who is passionate about building relationships, networking and meeting new people I knew this would be a great opportunity. I knew that moving to Victoria meant I would transfer to lululemon Victoria for the couple of weeks – if you know the lemon community then you know all is “good in the hood”. 
The move became a lot more easier the more I looked deeper into it – heck my best friend lives in Victoria! It became evident that I wanted to dive into a new environment, face new challenges, discover something new within me and around me – #growth.

Future of Marketing: A Discussion on Innovation in Marketing

Wednesday, February 28 I was invited by BrainStation to attend the Future of Marketing event they were hosting that evening at their Vancouver space.

Below are my takeaways from the panelists:

TRADITIONAL VS DIGITAL?

  • 95% today is using the digital approach
  • Digital is measurable – although one of the panelists agreed to disagree that if you want to measure anything – even if it is traditional you CAN find a way.

    “It might be hard and not easy BUT it is possible”

TIPS TO ENSURE YOUR CAMPAIGN MESSAGE IS BEING RECEIVED.

  • Designing for the meaning of people
  • Customer drive approach
    • Stay focused on the customer
  • Change behaviours
  • Balance + theme starts with the customer

Reality is tools are always innovating and you need to find what tool(s) work best to track your business.

It is important to note that we can all get distracted on tools and can rely on them too much. Ask yourself, what am I trying to do? What am I trying to accomplish? answer these questions before going to the tools you use.

ENGAGEMENT

  • Inbound approach
  • Create content worth sharing
  • Influence more authentically – “don’t be lazy”
    • find opportunities that will impact your business
  • Marketing is not advertising – think it’s a customers journey
  • Consider how people interact in different platforms

Do things that make people feel quote on quote “holy shit this is f**king amazing”
and partner with people who can get you the people to your website. Again, do something worthy.

If you’re working for a company who wants content, as a social media strategist and marketer you need to find the objective from the CEO or someone of high power that knows exactly what the objective is. Find this and then make strategic decisions that will layer to reach the end goal. It then becomes your responsibility to group the objective and create posts on social media. If you post without grouping an understanding of the objective then it is not effective.

These are just a few platforms the panelists spoke about in regards to social media. VERO and Instagram was one of the most talked about platforms out of all. This is because VERO is one of the newest social media platforms and the name “VERO” has been buzzing around. VERO is a platform that some may say “is the new Instagram.”

The following questions were asked to the panelists:

  1. Are any of you on VERO?
  2. Are all of you on each social media platform?
  3. What are your thoughts on using influencers to promote your product/service?

None of the panelists are on VERO and not all of the panelists businesses are on every platform. On a side note, this was my first time hearing about VERO and as I put on a poll on my Instagram account (@gopublikk) only 1 person knew of VERO.

Understanding how each platform affects your business is huge. It is definitely okay to be curious and be open to the new platforms. It is encouraged to explore and be knowledgable of them but it is important to know that just because it is trending you don’t need to be on it “just because” everyone else is. Moving forward there will always be new upcoming platforms – you don’t need to be on every single one. However, new platforms may also be beneficial to your business. Again, be curious and explore before “jumping the gun.” Technology isn’t going to give you all the things you need – remember to step back and be clinical.

When it comes to influencers I was surprised by the response of the panelists as they seemed to have mixed emotions about this approch. This is because you want the people who are representing the product to be authentic, genuine and passionate about your product/service.

Focus on content creators over influencers”

Think less social media.

Think more higher influencers.

Hard to get right, easy to get wrong”

You want to partner with people who will get you to your website, product or service. Recognize the real, Sit and measure.

Monday Motivation: KlersFitLife

Body image is something I have struggled with over the years and it wasn’t until recently (September 2017) I began a relationship with the gym (again) but was determined to approach it with a healthier mindset.

To love my body everyday, wake up with positive energy, gratitude, and a heart overflowing with a whole lot of love – so much that I will share it with everyone else around me. Everyday I learn, grow, and love my body. I focus on the positive and celebrate the small victories because these are important too!

Below is a little recap from my LIVE video that Sid Akbari (Health + Fitness Coach) aka my trainer and great friend did today

  • Current weight 108lb – 5’1
  • Find Sid on Instagram @hdfitnessbc
    • Sid has been in the industry for 5 years
  • How long have I been training with Sid?
    • 4-5 months
    • Started with 3x a week the first 3 months
    • Currently seeing Sid once a month
  • My goal: maintain a healthy lifestyle – gain strength, grow my glutes and tone!

WORKOUT PLAN

  • Intermitten Fasting – first month – endurance training
    • “diets that cycle between a period of fasting and non-fasting during a defined period”
  • Hypertrophy training – putting on size
    • volume training
  • Focus moved to strength training
    • “if you want to build size you need to lift heavy. You also need to eat more – especially if you want a booty”- Sid
    • Main muscle is gluteus maximus – eat lots of good food!
    • It’s still good to do the other small exercises to stabilize your muscles BUT you do still need to lift heavy!

Studio Classes I like to attend:

    • Oxygen Yoga, New Westminster – Samara Dawn is an amazing instructor. I attend this studio for deep stretch, yoga, fast and furious, or power core classes.
    • Sauna + Hot Tub – sweat it out! I like to change it up every week and certain weeks I choose to hit the recreation centres for my workouts and relax my body in the hot tub. I love to stretch out in the sauna and recently I have been putting in some ab work too!
    • Yyoga – this studio has a different atmosphere and it is very yoga focused. If I really want to lay low and am feeling super stressed out I tend to head over to Yyoga on Highgate. Something about this studios atmosphere that draws me in when I am stressed.
    • All City Athletics – Boxing
    • Eastwood Cycle – Spin! Tessa Goldberger is a gem!
    • Harbour Dance Centre – I grew up dancing & was on a competitive team for 13 years. I like to get in the studio from time to time. Although hip hop was my main style I have been attending Heel classes – getting my sass on & sweating it out? That’s a yes – ha!

FOOD

  • How do you get a flatter stomach?
    • general rule is with every meal try to have fibre, carb, and a protein source”- Sid
      • Some goodies: broccoli, sweet potato and chicken (example)
    • increase water intake – a lot of weight your caring is NOT body fat but water weight – when you don’t drink enough water your body retains more water – Drinking water will help you get rid of that excess weight”
      • This is why I have increased my water intake to 3.5-4L a day

Be prepared to be in the restroom a lot when you start this- HA!

  • Prepare your meals
  • What do you recommend to eat before/after workouts?
    • “Something that gives you energy – such as potatoes. Eating good carbs after a workouts increases your insulin level which helps with protein synthesis – building new muscles” – Sid

Currently, I am eating what I crave and I am not on a “strict” diet. However, I will be challenging my body a little more and will NOT be touching any goodies starting the week of March 12 – stay tuned!

(ex. I use to only squat 90lb vs 160-180lb today both times weighing at 108 lb)

Supplements

Although Sid definitely joked in the LIVE video about steroids – ha! It’s been a very long time since I have taken any supplements.

I did start taking pre-workout in January but I don’t use it for every session.

I am looking into purchasing protein (for busy days), BCAA + water tight (helps me drop more water weight).

  • you should only be taking supplements if you are not getting all the nutrients you need. For example, protein shakes” – Sid

20180205_023615.png2018 is the year where I appreciate myself more, love myself more and acknowledge every little success and celebrate it – specifically, my body. For the longest time my body image was never ‘good enough’ for me. I never appreciated my efforts in the gym nor did I celebrate my small victories… until this year.

This year I choose to wake up with more gratitude, self-love and a heart overflowing with positive energy, so much that I share this with everyone else around me. I choose to learn, grow, and cherish my body.

I choose to love myself unconditionally – body, flaws and all. To love myself the way I hope for someone else to one day love me. Fiercely, and unafraid to show it!

I understand that self-love and awareness can take practice and so I am not saying that this comes easy to me. I practice this everyday. It went from days to now just moments where I catch myself in a mindset where I am feeling this negative energy about my body/self hovering over me. When this happens I lean on my relationships and that is where I can say from the bottom of my heart that I am so grateful for the beautiful humans who will lift me up. My heart is full with all of you – you know who you are!
