Victoria: WEEK1


My PR practicum kicked off this past Monday morning on March 12th. I walked into HeartPress PR and felt immediately welcomed by the team and was gifted my personal HeartPress PR coffee mug. My heart was so full and right in that moment I knew I had made the right choice. It took approximately 1 minute to make new connections in the PR industry in Victoria – thank you HeartPress PR for this opportunity and for being so kind!

My first week consisted of learning our brand voice, getting to know our current clients and the new projects we have upcoming. In addition to this, the team had two big presentations and an important pitch that I got to sit in and take part in. My first week was full with a lot of work and that was just the beginning. I love every minute in the office and as each day goes by I am now more than ever sure about my career choice in PR.


When it comes to lululemon I was not nervous to meet the team at all. Walking into lululemon felt like walking into a room full of more ‘family’ members! New faces with big smiles and filled with lots of love, positivity, and energy! The store felt like home and I am so grateful to be a part of such an amazing company – #joblove.

Coffee Shop Of The Week:
Caffe Fantastico was the first coffee shop I went to and the views in this shop are beautiful! My supervisor and I took our one-on-one meeting over to this cafe on a sunny day and the scenery was beautiful! You definitely need to try there peanut butter cookie with a side of Cafe Au Lait (coffee of the day) – textured steamed milk. Your choice of texture!
St Patricks Day – Woo! I hit up The Canoe Pub and a live local band called OK Charlie performed top hits – you bet I was on the dance floor singing a long!

Why Victoria?

“Why did you decide to move to Victoria for your practicum? Vancouver has so many opportunities!”

This question comes up quite often, especially since I am now officially in Victoria for the next couple weeks. So here is why I chose to move to Victoria for my practicum:
It really came down to the overall experience. After travelling back and forth from Vancouver to Victoria a consecutive of times I started to get curious about the PR work that Victoria may have to offer. I know Victoria is small and opportunities may be limited, however the idea of living on my own for a couple of weeks, exploring a new place, and stepping out of my comfort zone was very intriguing!
As an individual who is passionate about building relationships, networking and meeting new people I knew this would be a great opportunity. I knew that moving to Victoria meant I would transfer to lululemon Victoria for the couple of weeks – if you know the lemon community then you know all is “good in the hood”. 
The move became a lot more easier the more I looked deeper into it – heck my best friend lives in Victoria! It became evident that I wanted to dive into a new environment, face new challenges, discover something new within me and around me – #growth.

Future of Marketing: A Discussion on Innovation in Marketing

Wednesday, February 28 I was invited by BrainStation to attend the Future of Marketing event they were hosting that evening at their Vancouver space.

Below are my takeaways from the panelists:


  • 95% today is using the digital approach
  • Digital is measurable – although one of the panelists agreed to disagree that if you want to measure anything – even if it is traditional you CAN find a way.

    “It might be hard and not easy BUT it is possible”


  • Designing for the meaning of people
  • Customer drive approach
    • Stay focused on the customer
  • Change behaviours
  • Balance + theme starts with the customer

Reality is tools are always innovating and you need to find what tool(s) work best to track your business.

It is important to note that we can all get distracted on tools and can rely on them too much. Ask yourself, what am I trying to do? What am I trying to accomplish? answer these questions before going to the tools you use.

  • Influence more authentically – “don’t be lazy”
    • find opportunities that will impact your business
  • Marketing is not advertising – think it’s a customers journey
  • Consider how people interact in different platforms

Do things that make people feel quote on quote “holy shit this is f**king amazing”
and partner with people who can get you the people to your website. Again, do something worthy.

If you’re working for a company who wants content, as a social media strategist and marketer you need to find the objective from the CEO or someone of high power that knows exactly what the objective is. Find this and then make strategic decisions that will layer to reach the end goal. It then becomes your responsibility to group the objective and create posts on social media. If you post without grouping an understanding of the objective then it is not effective.

These are just a few platforms the panelists spoke about in regards to social media. VERO and Instagram was one of the most talked about platforms out of all. This is because VERO is one of the newest social media platforms and the name “VERO” has been buzzing around. VERO is a platform that some may say “is the new Instagram.”

The following questions were asked to the panelists:

  1. Are any of you on VERO?
  2. Are all of you on each social media platform?
  3. What are your thoughts on using influencers to promote your product/service?

None of the panelists are on VERO and not all of the panelists businesses are on every platform. On a side note, this was my first time hearing about VERO and as I put on a poll on my Instagram account (@gopublikk) only 1 person knew of VERO.

Understanding how each platform affects your business is huge. It is definitely okay to be curious and be open to the new platforms. It is encouraged to explore and be knowledgable of them but it is important to know that just because it is trending you don’t need to be on it “just because” everyone else is. Moving forward there will always be new upcoming platforms – you don’t need to be on every single one. However, new platforms may also be beneficial to your business. Again, be curious and explore before “jumping the gun.” Technology isn’t going to give you all the things you need – remember to step back and be clinical.

When it comes to influencers I was surprised by the response of the panelists as they seemed to have mixed emotions about this approch. This is because you want the people who are representing the product to be authentic, genuine and passionate about your product/service.

Focus on content creators over influencers”

Think less social media.

Think more higher influencers.

Hard to get right, easy to get wrong”

You want to partner with people who will get you to your website, product or service. Recognize the real, Sit and measure.

To be inspired. 

As you all know, we attended CommYOUnityYVR’s screen night event at the Settlement building in Gastown on Saturday, June 10th. The power of personal connection is truly amazing because to give and connect with creative people in this world is divine. We want to start off by thanking Kiana Heighton for bringing everyone together and making this night happen. The whole team did a spectacular job with setting the relaxed, yet fun ambience. For those who haven’t been in the Settlement Building, the decorations and natural lighting coming from the windows turned the place from feeling cold to cozy; it’s what made the place look so unique and beautiful. It had the guests feeling cool because of the airy, open mood. This became so evident as the night went on and the space continued to fill up. People continued to vibe off each other’s energy and the night became that much better. We can vouche for that because the moment we walked into the building we both felt the burst of connection; a warm, tingling sensation. To be in a room that allows relationships to be built by countless supporters and entrepreneurs is truly influential. The evening started off with short delightful conversations with old friends, while leading into business like conversations with others.

We love to hear each other’s stories and business goals. After all, listening to what others have to say and seeking support is key to learning something new everyday. We listened to Alanah Morin introduce the group of individuals that took part in putting the night together. Alanah is also a member of Community For A Sustainable World  (@communityforasustainableworld)and the Co-founder and Director of Operations.

As the evening carried on we got to know what each entrepreneur is challenged with, what community means to them, and a little about the industry each entrepreneur works in.

So what was our big take away from this night?

Networking is a big part of getting yourself out there, but you don’t always have to focus on that. To be present at a night like this reminded us how much we appreciate and enjoy genuine conversations. Laughing while working is great for your soul – work doesn’t always need to be serious – #laughalot.

Before our business foundation can even begin to support and empower other businesses we must understand where others are coming from. Therefore we like to start every conversation by: asking questions, finding commonalities, and just listening. We’re not perfect, but over time the more events we attend, the better we’ll get at doing these 3 things. So our second take away from this night is recognizing the power of your words and communication. So we are making it our goal to voice wisely and to not expend it wastefully from now on.

“It’s a twin thing”

In early March we were approached to take part of an inspiring project, CommYOUnityYVR. The last couple of days you have seen us mention this event in our social media channels – we’re super excited and touched to have been asked to take part in such an inspiring project. The screening event for CommYOUnityYVR is tomorrow, June 10. It is aimed to promote local entrepreneurs to share their story and inspire others. We are grateful to have been asked to take part in such an amazing project and vision because we love to share stories and collaborate with locals – we love what we do. Kiana Heighton, director of the show, Co-Founder and Community Event Director of Community for a Sustainable World collaborated with a total of 30 entrepreneurs from different fields. Kiana asked questions (tough ones too), and dug deep to reveal each story and have it presented publicly on screen night to a group of local individuals. A big shoutout to Sandy M for all the editing and her videography skills, and another shout out to Tessa B and Ashley R for coming together and bringing a vision to life.

We are ready to mingle, eat, and have some drinks on Saturday! More importantly, to collaborate, connect, and speak to many entrepreneurs and individuals. We look forward to sharing our story, learning about others obstacles, challenges and success. To inspire and be inspired!

As entrepreneurs, we are thrilled to be a part of this moving project that will be happening this coming Saturday. We shared our story with Kiana and got deep down and personal with her about Gopublikk as a business and how we started laying the groundwork for success. Being part of this screening brings us so much joy – to be a part of a night that can impact not just one person, but several from the community to commit to an unrelenting pursuit of a goal they may have – that itself is rewarding. We love what we do and you’ll find us sharing that in everything that we do.

This Saturday it is going to be an honour to be in a room filled with many individuals that share the same vision; bringing the community together.

It’s a new year and we are excited!

Thinking about everything that we did in 2016…well naturally because we’re both woman who are emotional and busy, I think of the word “Panic.”Because of the amount of work projects we’ve been a part of, it has been one hectic year for us. Despite the success we’ve obtained and the goals we’ve achieved, our road to get there was difficult- but not impossible. Before we get started on how we felt this year, we want to say that we are happy and thankful for all the people we connected and partnered with. Throughout our journey, some of these people have motivated us even more to make movements that empower others, but mainly one another. Not only have we grown individually, but together as business partners we have stepped it up and also grown immensely. We embarked on a new approach for our business and really turned something from good to great.

Now with 2017 here, Kleyra and I are looking for nothing but the same thing – if not more. We stand by one another, we help and support one another, and we also challenge one another. We believe and hold ourselves accountable to a lot of things. Before Kleyra and I started Gopublikk we knew that going into it we had to prepare ourselves mentally; tell ourselves that anything is possible and that patience is a virtue. With those two things in mind, we both became capable of maintaining the same level of intensity and commitment to make things happen – even when it gets tough. Lets face it, overcoming adversity isn’t easy.

2016 was rough because we definitely were fighting against time. We realized that we needed to get so much done in less time. This was our fault. Being able to execute things accordingly resulted in sleepless nights, lots of shakes to replace meals, and long nights of scheduling. For this reason, we found ourselves trusting our instinct more then usual to get things done. Their had been many moments where we were just sitting at our dinner table contemplating how things were going to be completed with so many ideas and things in mind. With all things considered, we started feeling anxiety and feeling stressed because we both would get overwhelmed with our homework, other jobs, and our home life. Our life isn’t balanced. We can try and say we divide our time equally, but realistically we just know that as long as we make time for the things we want and the people we love; we’re more than okay. By making room and setting this as a priority for the two of us, it helped make things a lot easier and bareable. Love and support goes a long way. Anyway, last year we gathered our thoughts and process during the year and this year we did it before it started – we’re already on a roll!

Get ready for us Vancouver!
